Seventeen candidates have filed for party nominations for the November election with six days until the filing deadline. The piece lists incumbents, contenders, and unfiled hopefuls across county offices, state senate seats, and central committees, noting primary chances and potential reentries.
Frederick County Republicans will back a single candidate for the new Frederick Carroll state senate seat. Merril F. Wachter, chairman, announced the plan at a dinner to name the party slate. Owner of Rowes Plumbing and Heating Engineering Co since Feb 1 1958, his family business traces to the Hahn and Rowe Plumbers. Ewing, born Martinsburg W V, moved to Frederick at nine, educated locally and attended multiple trade schools and courses including Naval Gun Factory Machinists School and Boston School of Advanced Oil Heat.
Thomas R O Farrell announces candidacy for one of two seats in the Frederick Carroll Senatorial District as the newly created district opens. Complete details appear on page 16.
Federal grants and loans exceed 2.2 million for West Virginia antipoverty efforts and construction projects. Keyser receives 385000 grant and 350000 loan from the Economic Development Administration to develop an industrial park with 35000 local participation and a 40 year loan at 3.34 percent interest.
National Church leadership acts to blunt dissension as ministers and congregations in Maryland and Virginia weigh withdrawal over fears of ecumenical ties. Letters threaten expulsion and loss of ordination for those pushing separation, with about 40 area churches under scrutiny and several votes reportedly planned this Sunday.
The OAS voted to withdraw the 8000 man peace force from the Dominican Republic within 90 days. The first US contingent of about 1100 men, largely from the 82nd Airborne, is expected to depart next week as ships head to Santo Domingo.
An arson investigation is under way after a Friday barn fire near Utica destroyed a bank barn, a garage, livestock and equipment with an estimated loss of 25000 dollars. Frederick County endures a sixth day of temperatures near 90 degrees with 92 reached yesterday marking the hottest since last September. Heat expected to continue through Monday with relief possible tonight as temperatures drop to the 60s. Farmers in northern areas report stressed pastures and Blue Grass fields while state police note heavy traffic on Routes 40 and 15N as residents seek cooler resort areas.
In South Viet Nam giant B52 bombers hit enemy supply zones in the central highlands as U S forces wage two major operations. The 25th Infantry clashed with North Vietnamese regulars near the Cambodian border for the third day, with 58 enemy killed and 90 in three days, while about 800 troops participate in Operation Paul Revere begun May 10. Nathan Hale operation of the 1st Cavalry Airmobile continued into its sixth day 240 miles northeast of Saigon. Two Navy planes were shot down. a transport helicopter was downed with six crew and two wounded, during evacuations for Nathan Hale.
