Walkersville faces a sewage spill that sent nearly a million gallons into the aquifer over the weekend. Officials say no contamination detected yet, but residents rush to bottled water while boosting safety with boiling water for meals and drinks. Residents with weakened immune systems urged extra precautions as community anxiety grows.
Walkersville town officials enacted two emergency ordinances at a Wednesday town meeting in response to a sewer line break. Maryland Department of the Environment personnel were on site Wednesday afternoon to investigate the break and potential enforcement action, according to MDE spokesman Quentin Banks.
Frederick mayor Jim Grimes said the city stands ready to help Walkersville during its water crisis, offering to connect to the town’s water line. Officials noted Walkersville’s water is currently safe for most residents. A 30 day ordinance paused activity within 500 feet of the damaged area and banned outside watering for Walkersville system users. Explosive Experts used 17 pounds of charges to clear rock for new lines along Glade Road, prompting questions about who will cover repair costs as officials review liability.
Raymond Drake, serving 99 years for the 1977 murder of Odette Reeder in Clearwater, Florida, was denied parole by a three member Florida Parole Commission. The Reeder family, traveling from Frederick, testified against release, expressing grief and relief as the panel unanimously refused.
Kristin Myers, 18, was named one of six Distinguished Junior Members at Holstein Association USA's convention in Boise Idaho. She lives at Windsor Manor Farm New Windsor with her parents Jagon and Donna and sister Kelly.
State troopers rounded up a herd of cattle wandering along US 340 near Frederick. Four cattle escaped a field, with one returning home, and three moved toward Ballenger Creek Pike before taking shelter behind 6503 Mallory Court. Troopers corralled them for three hours using a rope to guide the herd back until the owner arrived. Local observer and youths witnessed the unusual scene.
Frederick officials move to curb employee pool passes from a 1998 free family system. Rick Weldon will draft a policy with legal and HR teams requiring passes be requested through HR which holds a family-member list. Roelkey Myers says current 50 passes will be circulated while policy is developed. An aldermanic vote also endorses a mural on the west wall of 4 W Seventh St facing Taney public housing playground.
