Energy Program Demonstrates Small Business Savings in Frederick
A winter energy audit in downtown Frederick linked to the Energy Future's Conference in January 1842 led to a Maryland Energy Office grant of $5,000 for a two stage program. Six businesses were audited by Hill Gallentine to assess energy use and propose improvements. Rogers Office Supply and Equipment and Elkins Jewelers Inc. adopted recommendations, with Rogers installing a pulse gas furnace and upgraded ducting plus a seven day thermostat to cut gas bills by about 64 percent and boost ROI to 70 percent annually, saving around $30,000 over ten years.

Energy Saving Renovation at Elkins Jewelers Inc
Elkins Jewelers Inc plans to replace domestic hot water from an oil boiler with an electric tank and add an outside air economizer to the AC system. The oil boiler will heat space only, reducing heat in the basement and sometimes enabling winter cooling. Post-change, anticipated energy savings reach about 40 percent for hot water and 35 percent for AC, enabling capital for other uses. Community support and volunteer hours backed by the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service, Maryland Energy Office, Chamber of Commerce, Downtown Merchants Association, Frederick City Mayor's Office, and Alternate Energy Services, with input from the Re thinking Tomorrow Small Business Committee members.
