Dredging could worsen pollutants into Chesapeake Bay

The Baltimore Harbor dredging project valued near 300 million dollars faces a public hearing as the Army Corps and a draft report raise concerns that deepening the 36 mile harbor channel could stir up and transport pollutants into the Chesapeake Bay more than prior estimates. Oceanographer Mitchell Granat says the findings from a Sacre Scale model show pollutants dispersing further, while a corps spokesman cautions on the model's interpretation and notes alternative dredging methods. Congress and the Reagan administration may influence funding and authority, with decisions due about 18 months out.
