Chinchilla Cape Worth $9,000 From Animals Grown Here
A Baltimore designer, Reg Cummings, breeds chinchillas on a one and a half acre Royal Blue Chinchilla ranch near Gambbrill Park. He aims to sell a blue grey capelet with twenty eight pelts for about $4,300 to a Washington furrier, retailing near $9,000. Chinchillas live in controlled rooms at 73 degrees with diets of hay, and litters of one to three kits are born several times yearly. Prices for pelts range from $10 to $50, with good breeders costing around $1,000. The piece highlights the rarity and high cost of chinchilla fur and its limited supply.
