Shrinking astronaut corps after Challenger disaster
After the January 28 shuttle explosion, the astronaut corps shrank from 102 to eight, with many veterans retiring or leaving for civilian jobs. Owen Garriott, Bruce van Heflin, and others cite delays, limited advancement, and uncertain flight prospects as driving factors. Navy, Air Force, and civilian pay differences shape career choices, while private industry lures with faster opportunities and pay.
