Funeral services set for two Maryland nuns killed in a Saturday car crash on Route 175 in Anne Arundel County. Sister Gertrude Matthews, 69, and Sister Mary Edward Walsh, 76, will be buried at St. Joseph's Provincial House Cemetery in Emmitsburg. Matthews spent 40 years in Pastoral Care at St. Agnes Hospital with roles in emergency and coronary care, taught at Seton High and St. Joseph's College, and held leadership posts in several schools. Walsh taught home economics at St. Joseph's, served as Seton and Elizabeth Seton teacher, and moderated the Baltimore chapter of the International Federation of Catholic Alumnae. They were passengers in the vehicle driven by Walsh, who reportedly lost control and struck a tree.
I A E junior Appleby of Middletown retired after 40 years as a police communication officer with the Maryland State Police. He recalled 15 to 12 hour shifts, living at the barracks, handling calls, dispatching troopers, aiding visitors, and dealing with unusual incidents including a self hanged prisoner and a dynamite prank. He noted changes in duties and more paperwork over time.
