Area stocks rose briefly to 50.75 but faded as earnings and economic data weakened sentiment. Fed rate cuts are expected but analysts doubt they improve fundamentals. May housing starts fell 0.4 percent to 1.62 million. Russell 2000 slid to 488.73 while NYSE volume neared 1.40 billion. Overseas markets mixed with Nikkei down about 1 percent. DAX and CAC-40 rose modestly.
