Killer's death sentence cut to life in prison
ROCKVILLE Juror findings cut death sentence for James A. Calhoun 37 who has spent nine years on death row. The jury of eight women and four men ruled the prosecution failed to prove Calhoun fired the fatal shot that killed police officer Philip C. Metz 33 of Germantown during a March 27 1981 White Oak robbery. Defense urged mercy noting Calhoun's “calming influence” in jail and mitigating circumstances from a Supreme Court ruling narrowing capital punishment decisions.
