Frederick County Adopts 139 Million Budget For 1991

Frederick County commissioners approved a 139 million dollar general budget for fiscal year 1991 by a 4 to 0 vote. The plan preserves a 2.19 dollar tax rate per 100 of assessed value and dedicates 73 million to the school system, with increases for public safety public works and community college. A 25.6 million capital budget was also approved, including 9.8 million for the school board.

Bristow admits fatal shooting of his son

Yellow Springs man George Prentice Bristow 42 admits firing a single shot from a Mossberg shotgun that killed his sleeping 23 year old adopted son Prentice Jon Bristow after fearing threats to burn down the family home. Bristow faces up to 30 years with sentencing set for Aug 23.

FSK Mall to Add Leggett's in $8.7M Renovation Plan

Crown American owners announce a $8.7 million expansion at Francis Scott Key Mall in Frederick adding a 100,658 square foot Leggett's department store. The project includes 1,093 more parking spaces, skylights, new lighting, redesigned entrances, and improved traffic, with a target completion before Christmas and a Sept 18, 1991 Leggett's opening.

County builders counter no growth candidates

The Frederick County Builders Association targets no growth candidates in the upcoming commissioner election. Members will register industry workers to vote for development friendly officials, aiming to influence the Sept. 11 primary. Registration closes Aug. 13, with efforts limited to association members.

Stein enters race for Maryland House District 4A seat

Seth F. Stein a 29 year old quality assurance manager with Solarex Corp in Frederick announced his candidacy Tuesday for the Maryland House of Delegates District 4A. The Republican faces two Democratic incumbents Thomas Hattery and George Littrell with little opposition so far. Stein advocates two party competition and opposes abortion with support for state abortion restrictions.

David Gray Enters Frederick County Commissioner Race

David P. Gray 50 of Walkersville filed as a Frederick County Commissioner candidate for the Sept 11 Republican primary. A 11 year Planning Commission member, he switched from Independent to Republican in April, citing a citizen oriented party. He owns Gray Enterprises with his wife and has 25 years in planning and procurement, plus roles with Frederick Union Rescue Mission and local civic groups.

Mastrino seeks Frederick County Commissioner seat

Millard M. Mastrino, 49, safety director for Hahn Trucking in New Market and president of the United Fire Company of Frederick, filed his candidacy for Frederick County Commissioner. A Republican newcomer with 31 years at the fire company and 25 years in Maryland State Police, he argues emergency services funding and volunteer fire and rescue support would improve under his leadership.
