AOPA Fly-In draws thousands to Frederick event

About 3,000 people attended the fifth annual AOPA Fly-In and Frederick's Airport Appreciation Day in 89 degree weather. Some 300 aircraft were on site as seminars on GPS technology and aviation safety attracted crowds including Dana Salkeld of Gaithersburg who praised satellite navigation for its reliability and new approach-to-flight capabilities.

Eleven year old Cody Hamburg admires top koi on display during Lily Pons Days at Lily Pons Water Gardens over the weekend. Staffer Richard Koogle assists as the festival honors opera singer Lily Pons who gave the venue its name 59 years ago. Chechen Rebels Free Hostages in Budyonnovsk Standoff

Board votes tonight on raising class sizes to cut budget

Frederick County school board considers increasing high school student teacher ratio by 0.5 to save 318000 in salaries and benefits for fiscal 1996. Restaurants divided over smoking rules in Frederick area

At the Sizzler on Frederick's Golden Mile manager George Snyder notes positive views on a smoking section but says elimination is planned to meet new state rules. A county survey found 24 of 36 restaurants permit smoking, 12 do not, with liquor license status shaping policy. Woman killed in car crash at Point of Rocks

Maryland State Police said a Virginia man ran a stop sign at U S 15 and Md 464, colliding with Debra Kotch of Sterling. The pickup traveled east on Md 464 as Kotch drove south on U S 15 at about 10 p m, sending both cars over a guard rail and embankment. Passenger Paul Curlings was injured.

Hamfest Recycles Technology Draws Thousands in Walkersville

Mount Airy ham radio operator Alex Benitez says one man’s garbage is another’s treasure at the Frederick Radio Amateur Hamfest in Walkersville. The event drew about 4,000 attendees as vendors offered items from simple TV knobs to modern short wave radios at a ground behind the town fire station. Benitez notes the hobby lets individuals build and repurpose gear in a unique private radio service.
