Yeltsin's POW disclosure may undercut aid requests

Russian President Boris Yeltsin pressed Congress for a $24 billion Western aid package while revealing that missing American prisoners in the former Soviet Union may exist. White House aides pledged quick accounting and full cooperation, as Bush and Yeltsin sought to advance nuclear disarmament agreements and a joint commission would study archives for evidence of prisoners.

State seeks death penalty for one Evans murder suspect

The state requests the death penalty for Christopher John Jarboe in the February 1992 murder of 80 year old Robert A. Evans Jr. in Frederick. Jarboe, 20, faces first degree murder trial in mid July. co defendant William Eugene Hartman, 29, will start after. A gag order bars officials from discussing the case outside court. The state also seeks life without parole if Jarboe is convicted. The killing followed a planned robbery at Prospect Park Plaza Apartment. police say guns jewelry and Evans car were stolen. Evans’ car was found burned Feb 11 near Frederick Junction. neighbors reported a foul odor Feb 15. Gary Minnisohn represents Jarboe and seeks exclusion of seized items from evidence due to warrant issues.

Weinberger Indicted in Iran Contra Scandal

The Iran Contra affair could yield three politically charged trials this election year including former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger. An indictment on five felony counts accuses him of lying and suppressing notes contradicting his 1985 congressional testimony on arms sales to Iran and Saudi aid to the Contras. County approves $141M fiscal 93 budget in Winchester Hall

Frederick County commissioners approved a $141 million fiscal 1993 budget amid protests by about 100 teachers and supporters over funding for the teachers contract. The plan raises property taxes and local taxes modestly while cutting state grants and maintaining education funding at $758 million, with other agencies sharing the remainder.

Frederick steelworker electrocuted at Carroll Creek project

Steven Randall Dawson 28 of Falling Waters West Virginia was electrocuted at 7 50 a m Tuesday while standing in a trench in water near West Patrick and North Bentz streets. He grabbed a bundle being lowered by a crane causing a high voltage line to arc. Dawson worked for Interlock Steelworkers Inc a subcontractor on the $58 million flood control project for Flippo Construction Co. Matt Potter declined comment. Ambulance crews attempted resuscitation.

Traveling black bear seen crossing U S 40A near Clifton Road

Teresa Arnett and her three children watched a large black bear move from Old National Pike toward the north side of the road near Clifton Road around 11:30 a.m. The bear halted traffic as it climbed guard rails and wandered into brush. Police and wildlife officials report multiple sightings over two days, suggesting a young male roaming the Brunswick area with no intent to harm people.
