New Dance Craze In U S Is Really 110 Years Old

The merengue, a lively Dominican rhythm, is the United States new craze though locals in San Cristobal claim it dates back over a century. Legends say it began in 1844 after a war hero returned with a limp, the dance spreading from there. The music uses the quira and tambora with a four four beat, and the phrase light-hearted describes its mood as dancers perform a knee bend and step on each beat. Dominican youths prepare for regional events ahead of the Trujillo era competition set for September, while romance is linked to the dance among younger fans.
