In Frederick area, gas cylinders mounted at pole bases release dry nitrogen into cables to prevent moisture intrusion and outages. Each cylinder holds about 220 feet of gas with a central alarm on toll lines, regular checks by crews, and replacements every four to five months. The system, used for three to four years locally, has reduced service interruptions and may expand with a three-stage compressor dehydrier in the near future.
