The Best Policy? Retail Theft and Employee Morale

Industrial psychologist Lawrence R. Zeitlin argues in Psychology Today that employee theft in American retail totals 8.5 to 10 billion dollars yearly, with about 4 billion from stores. He notes per-worker theft averages about 300 dollars annually, or 1.50 daily, and says management often opts for controlled theft as a way to preserve job enrichment and retention rather than raise pay or improve duties. He urges ethical alternatives and cautions that theft remains theft regardless of its justification.
