Welfare Funds Were Cut By Legislature

Baltimore June 10 General Assembly cuts in State Department of Welfare assistance funds halt plans to place children in boarding care after June 30. Acting director Elizabeth G. Smith said local welfare boards will be notified money is available only for children in foster care at month end. Budget cut totals about 631,132 with 186,062 for boarding. Public Works previously refused a cushion of 216,616 for boarding children and general public assistance. Without local funding, about 91 children monthly risk losing care. Public assistance trends show declines, possibly sustaining current appropriations.
