A flash fire aboard the submarine Sargo at Pearl Harbor prompted Navy statements that damage details were unavailable and injuries were not confirmed. The vessel carried nuclear warheads, with no immediate injury reports.
The town board approved several 1961 building projects including a $2,000 two room apartment improvement for Roger E. Zimmerman of Walkersville, a $1,200 double garage and block house for Clyde Rigger of Smithsburg, and a $300 masonry double garage for James M. Rhoten of Lewistown. Additional permits include a $300 block garage on Woodsville Road in the Linganore district by Robert Young and a $1,200 Hanvers residence project for Clyde Rigger.
