The 18 day drought continues with only a light shower measured at 0.04 inch breaking the dry spell. Forecaster notes prior summers of 1930 and 1939 show longer stretches without rain. Expect light showers through today with more rain likely Thursday and Friday and cooler temperatures after a 63 degree night.
A ten year old Negro girl with diphtheria prompted a rapid immunization push in Frederick. Within 48 hours forty children who had contact with the patient received shots as health officials and Lincoln School staff worked to prevent an outbreak. The health department, private physicians, and teachers organized a screening at Lincoln School with a temporary vaccination station.
The Atomic Energy Commission defended the high cost of a Hanford plutonium refinery, citing local protection and national defense needs. The project, initially estimated at 46 255 000, is projected to reach about 25 million more, as Senate hearings probe charges of waste. Maryland Roads Commission seeks removal of grade near Bethesda where U S Treasurer William A Julian died in a car crash, urged by Montgomery County Council.
Phoenix Arizona reports Emmett McLoughlin 41 a former Franciscan priest who left the order six months ago will marry June 13 to Mary Davis 34 a medical record librarian at St Monica s Hospital. Davis is the daughter of Mrs Tully Lobb of Bayard New Mexico.
Adjutant Alvey M. Norwood was nominated for commander without opposition at the June meeting of Francis Scott Key Post No. 11 American Legion. Other unopposed nominees for vice commanders, finance officer, chaplain, and historian were listed, with a seven member executive committee. A polling committee was named for the July election. A report on the Legion sponsored hard of hearing clinic showed 88 children examined and 28 cured. Three Frederick boys will attend Boy’s State at Bainbridge. A meeting of veterans groups is planned for Armistice Day parade planning. American Legion representation noted.
A hearing is set for July 1 in Equity Court on the petition of Mrs. Lynn J. Harshman of Baltimore for compensation to her son and his wife for long care. The court is asked to fix attorney fees for Mrs. Harshman’s lawyers and appoint trustees to hold $10,000 from real estate and stock for her lifetime and then to heirs of her late daughter. Trustees include Mrs. Miriam A. Brandenburg’s attorney and others. Mrs. Harshman, now 86, says her son tried to provide a home in Baltimore from 1947 to 1949 but could not due to her age and condition.
Paris June 15 Kremlin officials awaited a reply from Andrei Vishinsky on a proposed East West transport trade accord to aid Berlin. Western diplomats said the plan would create a four power commission to supervise an all German economic board and guarantee free transport rights into Berlin in exchange for a set exchange rate. The session ended without a final decision as Vishinsky asked for more time while Moscow considered the Western response.
Baltimore June 15 The State Roads Commission and advisory council unveiled a three point plan to maximize modern highways in Maryland. The program seeks road modernization by smoothing curves removing humps widening and resurfacing plus rebuilding trouble spots and constructing new highways including limited express roads with dual lanes parkways and overpasses. Expressways in progress or survey include routes from Edmondson Avenue Baltimore to Burtonsville toward DC line and connections between Frederick and Washington and Friendship Airport to the Baltimore city line. Bypasses around cities such as Annapolis via a new Severn river bridge are planned and a new revenue source to fund construction is agreed upon.
A large attendance from banks in Western Maryland is expected tomorrow night as the Blue Ridge Conference of Bank Auditors and Controllers hosts a Ladies Night at the Vindobona Braddock Heights. The event starts at 6 30 with dinner and entertainment to follow. Guy Neikirk of Hagerstown completes his term as conference president Thursday and Gerald G Remsberg of Frederick will take over as president.
A registered carrier pigeon, shot through one wing, is found on East Street by Nathaniel Williams of 231 East Sixth Street. Police identify the owner as C. W. Smith of Crestline. The bird is kept by Williams while authorities notify Smith. The wound is not serious and may heal.
New York traders saw an early stock surge stall after the open as demand faltered but fractional gains to about a point persisted. It marked the second straight session of a stand after a 44 year low, with higher prices listed for several major firms including U S Steel Bethlehem Steel General Motors and Chrysler.
Washington reports Harold Ickes and Dr Edward Condon and wife Emilie testified for defense in Judith Coplon espionage trial. Prosecutor Kelley objected to relevance. Judge Reeves sustained. Ickes noted 13 years as Interior Secretary and acknowledged Miss Ruth Gruber. questions on Communist ties were blocked. Condon confirmed scientific journals for sale and atomic equipment details were deemed irrelevant to Coplon’s guilt or innocence.
Senator Lucas of Illinois warned against talks of a depression saying the country could talk itself into one. He cited Franklin D. Roosevelt and the fear itself quote as still valid while addressing Republican plans for a $50 million public works and relief planning program to prepare for future spending.
Washington reports William Walker aged 35 leapt into the Potomac River after predicting the end of the world. Witness R. J. Tepper, a graduate student, saw Walker near East Potomac golf course shouting about two devils. A passerby later witnessed the fall and police were alerted. Diggs charged with shooting his father in East Baltimore.
Attorney General Clark called a Times Herald story claiming J Edgar Hoover resigned as FBI chief ridiculous. He noted Hoover objected to using secret FBI reports in Judith Coplon’s espionage trial and said there was no resignation. White House and Capitol Hill reactions followed, with Clark testifying on civil rights bills.
The 23rd annual Rural Women's Short Course at the University of Maryland gathers about 1,000 farm and rural women from across the state for a five day event ending Friday. Speakers include Rep Ed Gossett on displaced persons and Harold Carlton of the AAA on Can Your Children Drive and Live. John Metcalfe will discuss Where are we Going in Foreign Affairs as foreign issues dominate the program. Veteran attendee Mrs Sarah Weels Mulligan of Berwyn is back for her 23rd session.
On its second day, the Maryland State Aerie Fraternal Order of Eagles held a morning business session at the Eagles Home on Market Space with nearly 100 delegates. The session ran from 9:30 to 12:00, followed by a noon luncheon at the Southern Restaurant. Officers’ election was planned for the afternoon.
The Senate Banking committee voted to probe a proposal for a coordinator or chief negotiator for northern coal producers. Senator Robertson said operators fear monopolistic control and a single negotiator in disputes with the United Mine Workers. George Love said many producers favor appointing Harry M. Moses as coordinator. John L. Lewis reportedly favors the plan.
A court decree signs custody of Virginia Clary Poole with her father Thomas C Poole after three years as a ward of the Childrens Aid Society. Judge Patrick TM Schnauffer endorses the change while CAS finds it in the child s best interests. Mrs Gertrude Shaffer seeks Sundays custody under mutual arrangements. Attorney Wilbur F Sheffield Jr represents Mrs Shaffer.
Maryland plans to ask the U S Supreme Court to review a Baltimore court ruling that held key Rule 504 provisions restricting local crime news violate press freedom. The Maryland Court of Appeals overturned several contempt convictions, and State Attorney General Hall Hammond vows to file within two to three weeks.

Rockville June 15 A 586000 contract for five new elementary schools in Montgomery county was awarded to Walter B Avery of Washington The package includes 41000 for landscaping and groundwork The five schools with eight classrooms each will sit at Viers Mill Village Oakland Terrace Rock Creek Forest East Rockville and Rolling Terrace They should be ready in six months The board also approved a 63244 contract for a four classroom addition to Somerset Elementary.
Washington reports the budget deficit for the year ending June 30, 1919 may exceed double the $600 million forecast. Officials warn the deficit could reach $1.2 to $1.5 billion as income tax receipts lag and revenue falls short of Truman’s January projections. As spending nears the 1949 pace, the interim deficit tops $2 billion with weeks remaining in the fiscal year.

Western Union Telegraph Co. sought Public Utilities Commission approval to raise charges by 25 cents per month for renting 1,296 electric clocks in the District of Columbia. The request signals higher consumer costs for timekeeping devices in the capital.
Eddie Waitkus Phillies first baseman, 29, was shot in Edgewater Beach Hotel Chicago by Ruth Ann Steinhagen 19. She told police she fired after welcoming him to her room and sought to relieve tension. He was gravely wounded but survived initial surgery. Steinhagen, who claimed admiration for Waitkus, stated she did not know him before the incident.
A gasoline tanker and a 1940 Chrysler sedan collide on Alternate Route 40 three and a half miles west of Frederick at 3 45 this morning. The tanker driver Henry Nusbaum 24 of Westminster was able to control the loaded vehicle after the car cut to its side and struck the left rear wheel. Police report total damage above 1000 dollars. The Chrysler driver John L Newman 19 a Fort Belvoir soldier had the car demolished and was charged with operating without a license and failing to drive to the right of the center. In Peoples Court Thurston Metz forfeited 6.45 for a stop sign violation and 11.45 for speeding. First Sgt Walter May made the arrest.
