Fort Hunt Firing on Admiral Dickins' Cruiser Near Marshalls Point
In a Washington defense action, Fort Hunt fired eight inch batteries at a cruiser in Admiral Dickins' squadron near Marshalls Point. The ship, which appeared to be a cruiser, rounded the point and approached Washington too slowly to signal. Fire from Fort Hunt and Fort Washington followed as torpedo boats and monitors moved toward the mine fields. Midshipman Vetrees of the Newark died during a separate naval exercise near Annapolis after swimming. A separate rail disaster near Golden Gate killed three and injured 29 when a train fell from a trestle. A New York prize fight was broken up by police, arresting several participants.
