Commissioners reject numerous zoning change requests
County commissioners vote against many proposed land use changes as plans for growth encounter water and sewer service hurdles. Terre Rus Khedenck dissented, urging caution until infrastructure improves and regional plans align with rural and agricultural designations. The panel also denied a west New Design Road parcel rezoning, keeping the county plan on track for July adoption.

Task force urges pay raises for Montgomery County school board
The Montgomery County School Board Composition Task Force recommends a 6.5 percent pay increase for board members and 2.5 percent for the student member, plus 4,900 for the board president. It also proposes fringe benefits and a ban on student participation in certain disciplinary decisions. The panel favors voting changes, four votes to pass motions, voter eligibility limited to grades 9–12 for student directors, and residency alignment with high school clusters. Changes require state legislative action, with a public hearing planned Sept 13 in Rockville and a report to the 2002 Maryland General Assembly.

Brunswick Budget Sparks Museum Curator Clash
Brunswick officials unveiled the fiscal 2002 operating budget drawing fire from Rebecca Trussell, curator of the Brunswick Railroad Museum, who seeks 10000 to fix a fire escape. The city funds Brunswick Railroad Days with 512000, while Trussell plans to pursue county and state aid.
