Plan Commission Forces Potomac Edison to Bury Lines at Substation

Frederick County Planning Commission voted 5-2 to require Potomac Edison to bury all lines to and from a proposed 345 kilovolt substation off Four County Drive near Mill Bottom Road and to enclose the site with masonry walls higher than the tallest structure. Residents argued the plan would devalue properties and pose safety concerns. The ruling prompts Edison to rethink the project as neighbors and the company weigh next moves. In related action, Bell Atlantic Nynex Mobile won conditional approval to build a 13 acre communications tower off Urbana Pike amid expanding demand and additional site evaluations. The County Commissioners will set policy on tower requests and countywide placement plans.
