Both parties express confidence on election eve as city voters head to polls for mayor, five aldermen seats, and city register. Three years ago Schley beat Fraley by 216, White toppled Gittinger by 217, with women voting for the first time amid unclear party affiliations. Polls open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow.
Governor Ritchie releases a letter from Dr. J Hubert Wade explaining the purchase of a car assisted by Samuel Leibowitz. Wade stresses the deal was private and unrelated to his duties on the State Board of Prison Control or Democratic State Central Committee. Also notes a 1877 Mt Vernon excursion wreck near Point of Hocks killing eight Frederick countians.
Glenwood Rice of Lewistown died at City Hospital after being struck by a Wolfe car driven by W A Murphy while driving cows with companions. He sustained a fractured skull and broken leg with injuries lasting about 15 hours. Funeral plans pending.
After a conference with President Harding Representative Mendell hastily convened the Republican Steering Committee to act on the ship subsidy bill and Muscle Shoals but the meeting got nowhere. The notice invites local news tips.
Ed ward Welling of Dayton and Gladys Green Wenrick of Wellville are in custody in Baltimore tied to two bank robberies in Maryland. Welling faces no bail while Wenrick is held on 2500 dollars. They are to be arraigned again June 25. Police identified a car tied to the Woodbine and Monrovia banks and collected fingerprints. Bank clerks in Baltimore aided the investigation.
The Boys Brass Band in white uniforms opened the service with a pleasing appearance. A large congregation attended the 7 pm services and 25 new members were welcomed into the church. The program featured songs, recitations, and exercises by Primary and Junior Departments, with several named participants and pieces such as What the Little Bird Said and The Earth is the Lord's. The church announces tonight’s official board meeting and a Wednesday prayer service at the Urban M E church for Adult Bible Class work.
Col Markey says Western Maryland Republicans will convene at Braddock Heights Hotel on June 28 to discuss Sen France renomination. Aimed at testing anti France sentiment within the party, the meeting will draw independent Republicans from multiple counties. Officials insist the action targets policies not the man, seeking to crystallize opposition to his re nomination.
James Washington colored was acquitted before Justice J Grahamer Johnson as evidence failed to prove guilt in a larceny charge. State's Attorney D R Angers prosecuted, with H. Sey Etchison defending. Witness Charles Hall testified Washington took a $5 bill to be changed into smaller notes. Washington claimed Hall gave coins to change into a $1 bill. Washington was arrested Saturday by Deputy Sheriffs Smith and Bartgis on Hall's warrant.
President Harding informs Nat Goldstein via letter that criticism over his acceptance of campaign funds from Lowdon does not reflect undeserving character. The Associated Press reports on the nomination for Internal Revenue collector at the St. Louis post. The note critiques Taockich atrocities in a separate headline.
The Evangelical Lutheran Sunday school Junior and Beginners units held a Sunday evening service in the church auditorium. The chancel was decorated and the program featured recitations, choruses, duets, and doxology under the supervision of Pastor Ray and Superintendent Mrs. Fromke. The men's class plans a Thursday outing and picnic.
George Lumb of Harrisburg Pennsylvania was elected District governor for Rotary Clubs 34th district at the International convention in Los Angeles California last week. He succeeds Ed L Stock of Washington DC. Frederick Rotariana learn that L R Derizbaugh secretary of the local Club and delegates to Los Angeles chaired the elections committee for the 24th District governor. Other committee members included Dr Ulrich of Baltimore and John Musser of Harrisburg. Mr and Mrs William Myers and Mr and Mrs Rena Cram of Washington DC visited James H Cram and family.
New York June 12 The death toll from a brief hurricane sweeping the metropolitan area rose past sixty with 18 bodies recovered from the sea and more at Hunter's Island and Traver's Island. City Island suffered heavy losses as crowds waited for word of missing relatives. A ferris wheel wreck at Classon Point Park in the Bronx killed seven and injured nearly 30. Paul Simon, owner of the wheel, was arrested on homicide charges as investigations began. Hudson and Harlem river boat victims also added to the toll as winds toppled boats and uprooted traders.
New York June 12 Short sellers dominated the morning as prices fell further with declines of one to five points. Trading heated up as minor oils motors independent steels coppers shipping and rails slumped while a few issues like Lake Erie and Western Virginia Carolina Chemical and Post cereal preferred showed strength. Call money opened at three percent and the market closed weak with about 1,450,600 shares traded.
The cemetery organization at Creagerstown has been incorporated as the Creagerstown Cemetery Company. The old part of the cemetery will be beautified and kept in good shape. Officers for the first year include President Roy W. Hanker and vice president James G Stevens.
Six long term prisoners escaped from the Maryland House of Correction at Dessups while guards on duty slept. One inmate used a teaspoon as a key to unlock a cell door and freed five others. They climbed to the roof via a ventilator and escaped down a bed clothing rope improvised from torn sheets.
