Harpers Ferry bridge repair continues after railroad fire
Reconstruction on the Baltimore and Ohio mainline bridge over the Potomac River continued with westbound traffic hoped to resume today and eastbound by Wednesday. A single track detour was used while about 70 daily trains normally cross the span. Fire damaged the structure and derailed six coal cars. 19 cars remained stranded on the bridge. Firefighters faced long hoses and a fatal fall from a catwalk. Damage was estimated at $100,000 with possible additional car damage.
