A strong late Tuesday afternoon storm swept through Monrovia and Gaithersburg Poolesville, ripping trees across Route 75, taking chimneys, and causing property damage. Power and telephone lines were interrupted, with lines down in multiple towns and hail reported in several areas. The storm cooled temperatures from 86 to 59 degrees, with unsettled, humid weather and scattered showers forecast for the next day.

Court punishes truck driver in wreck with 30 days jail and fine
Magistrate Wilbur F. Sheffield sentenced Stewart Ensor Roberts of Route 1 Thurmont to 30 days in jail and a $100 fine for reckless driving after a head on collision with Clarence G. Stevens of Route 5 Frederick on May 2 near the State Police barracks. Stevens fractured his jaw and his 1950 station wagon was demolished. Roberts testified he had driven nearly eight hours and veered to avoid two waiting cars, hitting Stevens as he pulled right. State Trooper Rouzee and witness Harry King also testified. Collateral forfeited included fines for improper passing and stop sign violations. Police and troopers Swomley, Simmons, Corbin, Stakem, and Lewis assisted.

1800 School Children Join Carefuliers Safety Campaign
Eighteen hundred students from Brunswick, Lincoln, Parkway, Washington Street, and North Market Street schools pledged to be careful and received Carefuliers cards in Frederick as part of a safety campaign by the Maryland State Police. Dick Mansfield, TV figure and former Metropolitan Police inspector, led the lecture arranged with Barracks B and the Maryland Traffic Safety Commission with Board of Education support. Similar talks will roll out in other schools this fall.
