Pantelleria Stepping Stone To Europe’s Underbelly Halted
Pantelleria, midway between Tunisia and Sicily, fell after 10 days of Allied air and naval bombardment. British and American forces targeted underground hangars and gun emplacements, destroying docks, warehouses, and airfields. The island, Mussolini’s fortress in the Mediterranean, housed about 10,000 residents and relied on figs olives and vegetables, with water scarcity shaping life and mule trails linking farms.

Beetle season returns as county leases traps to residents
With manpower tight the county plans to lease about 3 000 Jap beetle traps to residents for two years at 15 to 20 cents each. County Agent Henry R Shoemaker said traps have been used locally and will be available through designated outlets. Insect control also relies on spore dust and parasites released in several areas to kill grub stages, with full effects taking years to materialize.

Beetle Eradication Fund Allocations Noted In County
The county appropriated about 9500 this year for work against the beetle with state and federal funds. Most money will cover dust and distribution, plus 1,000 to 1,500 trade purchases to augment county supply. No more traps are available due to the war. Beetles typically appear around June 10 but the season is backward this year. No reports of appearance have been received yet.
