15 Acre Tract May Be Sold For Shopping Center
A 15 acre Frederick city parcel once tied to a Hilton and a Ramada hotel may finally become a retail center. Owner William B D Harris has a contract with Trammell Crow Co for land behind Howard Johnson's on Prospect Boulevard to build an about 110000 square foot mall anchored by Weis and a drug store with other stores. Harris sought planning approvals in 1982 for a Ramada hotel and earlier for a Hilton that never materialized. The planning commission continued the project to resolve landscaping and stormwater concerns. Additionally plans to develop seven acres off Mercer Place near U.S. 15 were postponed until an access road can be secured, drawing neighbor opposition over density and traffic.

Soviet defector gets 20 years for bank robbery shooting
Arnold Vasil Topazov, a 28 year old former Soviet soldier who defected over the Berlin Wall, was sentenced to 20 years for assault with intent to murder and 10 years for assaulting a police officer in connection with the Oct 23 1964 bank robbery at the Savings Bank of Baltimore in Frederick. He shot hostage Eugene G Sutely during the well planned heist and also took bank employees and a motorist hostage. The sentences run concurrently with a 20 year state term and a 10 year term, with a federal backdrop of a 20 year term already imposed.
