City halves bill for tree caused sidewalk repairs
Frederick officials voted to cover 50 percent of sidewalk repair costs when city trees cause damage, easing the burden on residents who previously paid the full bill. Thousands of Bradford pear trees planted before 1989 have broken sidewalks citywide, with repairs costing owners up to 500 dollars. The change aims to address complaints from about a dozen Gulf View residents and aligns with state law requiring replacements, as the city works with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The city estimates 70 thousand dollars yearly for shared repairs under the new policy.
