Heavy thunderstorm causes damage in Frederick County

A severe storm swept through Frederick County causing downed lines and minor damage with 84 customers out in Brunswick area and several funnel clouds sighted near Brunswick and Middletown. Potomac Edison crews restored most services by morning as traffic lights failed briefly and sewers overflowed in parts of the county. Authorities noted no major transmission outages and expected repairs by day’s end.

Public Invited To Final Drug Symposium

The final Drug Symposium Educational Series session will be held June 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School Rooms 52 and 53. The public can attend. A panel of experts and officials from Frederick will discuss preparedness to address drug issues with former addicts in the Hagerstown Training Center, with a field trip planned for June 12.

Market extends gains as Dow climbs toward 934

Man Charged With Murder In Brunswick

A 23 year old Brunswick man, Richard Eugene Lewis of 11 W Center St, was arrested by Maryland State Police early Saturday and charged with the murder of his 22 year old wife, Harriet Diana Lewis. She died of a gunshot wound to the head. Lewis is jailed without bond. Harriet was a Brunswick store clerk and Brownsville Heights Church of the Brethren member, survived by daughter Richelle and brother Edwin Isard. Services are planned at Brownsville Heights Church Wednesday.

Twenty Die as Plane Crashes at Tweed New Haven Airport

A Convair 580 propjet operating for Allegheny Airlines crashed while approaching Tweed New Haven Airport. At least 20 people were killed and three survived. The plane, bound from Washington to New London and New Haven, hit electrical cables and crashed into cottages, triggering an emergency morgue setup at Goffe Street Armory.

High Court Refuses Review of Railroad Strike Ruling

The Supreme Court declined to hear appeals from 169 railroads challenging a circuit decision allowing selective strikes by the United Transportation Union in national bargaining. Frederick County approves $54 million school building plan

County Commissioners approve a $54 million long range school building program for 1972 and a five year plan. The package includes 14 projects in 1972 with seven new facilities and multiple renovations and additions totaling over $17.7 million.
