Backup needed medical copters always busy
In the Westminster incident three Maryland State Police helicopters were dispatched. At the Norwood hangar five pilots and five medics work 10 hour shifts with 11 state craft, many in maintenance. Crews consider buying new choppers at 5.5 million each or a grand inspection lasting months while eight machines remain active. Since 1970 over 65 000 patient transports have been completed.
