Meyers top Communist figure’s papers housed at Frostburg
George A Meyers lifelong activist with an eighth grade education built a vast collection of Communist Party literature, letters, and artifacts now stored in Frostburg State University. The archive, numbering over 10 000 items, covers party activity since the 1930s and includes materials from the US Communist Party and Soviet era mementos. Meyers born in Lonaconing and a former Textile Workers Union organizer, served four years in federal prison under the Smith Act and later became labor secretary of the Communist Party USA in 1965. The Frostburg collection was arranged after Meyers offered 3 000 books and papers in 1991 and remains a significant, though controversial, resource for researchers.
