Hill climbers outshine Hoosiers in Solar Car Race
Solaray of Virginia Tech dominated the five day Eastern Regional Solar Car Invitational ending in Frederick. Solaray built a 40 minute lead over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology's Solar Phantom after day two, then Phantom suffered a wheel loss and motor fire incident. Phantom team leader Jon Rich was hospitalized after exposure to two live wires but released. The 500 mile route started Knoxville and ended at Solarex Corp, Ballenger Creek Pike. Solaray drivers Sarah Schwark and teammates described the car and its aerodynamics, while Phantom strategist Chip Montgomery noted the prolonged race marked a historic finish after earlier weather issues. Both schools are training for Sunrayce 95.
