World leaders tribute as D-Day veterans revisit Omaha Beach

Aging Normandy veterans return to Omaha Beach with presidents and monarchs honoring the 50th anniversary. The chill wind and mist echo June 6, 1944 as former soldiers recall fallen comrades. Clinton marks D-Day anniversary with tribute at Pointe du Hoc

President Clinton led a commemorative tour along Normandy beaches 50 years after D-Day praising Allied courage and the lasting impact of freedom. He joined French President Mitterrand and Queen Elizabeth II in ceremonies at Utah Bayeux and Omaha Beach while recalling Ranger bravery at Pointe du Hoc and honoring casualties from Omaha.

Maryland centenarian recalls lifetime in Thurmont area

Leotta Reed, turning 100 tomorrow, has never traveled far from Mechanicstown Thurmont and Baltimore is the farthest she has been. Born in 1894 she worked long hours at local restaurants and motels, saving money, until moving two months ago to Frederick Health Care Center where her son Lawrence Reed now lives apart. She recalls hard work, loyalty to employers, and a simple life, noting today’s youths drink and smoke too much.

Man honors D-Day fallen at Fort Detrick monument

Donald Wagner, a 66 year old Fort Detrick employee and veteran, lowers the American flag to half staff each June 6 at Blue and Grey Field. He caretakes a monument for nine Frederick County men killed at Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion and maintains a stone listing nine full names.

Paratrooper 76 Treks France After D-Day Reenactment Jump

In France Guy Whidden exhausted after a reenactment jump marking the 50th anniversary of D-Day. His wife Julia watched from the U S while waking at 4 a m to view coverage. Whidden 76 of Frederick was among 41 American paratroopers retracing the mission with one finger cut. Fellow veteran Earl Draper 70 of Inverness narrowly escaped serious injury when his main parachute tangled, forcing an emergency chute and a rough mud landing.

D-Day radio recordings found from NBC news broadcasts

Frederick resident Ray Py unearthed a four-record set of NBC News D-Day broadcasts from June 6 1944. The 40 minutes include on scene coverage and eyewitness reports from journalists back from the action. Py stored the fragile discs and plans to aid anniversary broadcasts.

160 dead as Chinese jet crashes after takeoff

A Soviet built TU154 operated by Northwest Airlines crashed near Xian in Shaanxi province with 160 aboard, nine foreigners among 446 passengers. No survivors found 12 hours after the crash, officials said. Separate incidents included a Dragonair flight making an emergency landing in Hong Kong and a Taiwan landing of a China Southern jet hijacked from Fuzhou to Canton.
