Grant to help Freeman workers

The U S Department of Labor issued a 100000 grant to aid 142 former Freeman Shoe Co workers in Frederick County. The emergency funds, arranged through the state Department of Employment and Training and the Frederick County Job Training Agency, will fund vocational training and workshops for about 35 workers. The plant closed May 2, leaving many displaced as local officials seek new vocations amid shoe industry foreign competition.

Catoctin Softball Captures State Class C Title

Pelton convicted of espionage in NSA secrets case

Ronald W Pelton, a former NSA technician, was convicted on four counts of conspiracy espionage and related offenses for selling US eavesdropping secrets to the KGB between 1980 and 1985. He was acquitted on one count and faces a possible life term at sentencing. His defense plans an appeal, arguing the FBI pressured him into confessing.

Eyler resigns education post amid added duties

Roger C. Eyler vice president of the Frederick County Board of Education resigns effective Aug 29 citing increased duties as technical director for Brunswick Corp. Appointed June 1983, he missed 15 to 20 percent of meetings, potentially 30 percent with his travels. Governor Harry Hughes to appoint a successor from nominees already listed by Republican and Democratic committees.

Thunderstorms Tonight Then Warm Humid Overnight

Frederick police switch to blue uniforms for city officers

City police will start wearing navy blue shirts with gray slacks, matching gold badges and shoulder patches. Chief Richard J. Ashton calls the change a professional upgrade, noting 606 shirts were purchased at about $20 each and that about 75 personnel will be outfitted.

Senate OKs missiles to Saudi Arabia veto override blocked

The Senate narrowly approved a 66 to 34 vote to let President Reagan sell missiles to Saudi Arabia, failing to reach the two thirds needed to override his veto. The $265 million package includes Sidewinder air to air missiles and Harpoon anti ship missiles, with $85 million of Stinger missiles dropped from the deal amid opposition.

Jury Probes Disappearance of 6 Year Old in Maryland

The Montgomery County grand jury investigates the Gaithersburg six-year-old girl who vanished on Saturday. Michele Lee Dorr’s father Carl Dorr and his brother Chuck Dorr were subpoenaed. Carl appeared and acknowledged to reporters he is a suspect in the case.
