Races Fatality Sighted In Jefferson County Car Collision
Three area residents died and a fourth was critically injured when a car collided head on with a tractor trailer four miles east of Charles Town on U S 340. Donald Elton Smith, Roger Hamilton, and Carl Hamilton were killed. Curtis Smith was hospitalized in serious condition. The victims had been at Charles Town races. The truck driver was unhurt. Funeral services were announced for the deceased and arrangements noted for the others.

Motorist Escapes Serious Injury in Rollover Crash
A Damascus man Charles Eugene Fritz escaped serious injury when his car rolled over on U S 40 east at Barthlows after he fell asleep behind the wheel. The vehicle crossed the median into the westbound lane, no other cars were involved. Fritz was treated at Frederick Hospital for forehead cuts. Investigator Tor Top Barnes charged him with reckless driving.

Holding Man Freed By Coroner's Jury
Washington AP report says Marine Corps enlisted man Pfc. James S. Mayer will face second degree murder charges despite an inquest verdict that William K. Shewbridge II died from an accidental cause after a fight outside a Washington tavern. Shewbridge, 18, of Bethesda, died when he struck his head on a steel pipe cap after Mayer struck him.

Two Car Chases End in Accidents as Police File 10 Charges
City Police reported two chases on Friday and today amid five crashes. One chase led to a fatal car strike and resulting injuries with James Edward Van Cleave Jr. charged with drunken driving and multiple violations. The other chase involved Robert H. Auth, charged with reckless driving and running red lights. Additional parking-lot crashes produced no charges, while a third street collision led to a yield-right-of-way violation for Willard Keller.
