Families seek escrow for Gacy book profits
Kenneth Prest and Harold Piest lead a legal bid to keep any profits from works about John Wayne Gacy in escrow to benefit victims' families. The suit targets Gacy, his lawyers, a Houston writer and agents, arguing only the public should profit from the macabre case. A court hearing was set as Illinois law already requires escrow of felon profits.

Illinois Son of Sam law blocks profits from crimes
The law, nicknamed after David Berkowitz, took effect Sept 22 to bar Gacy profits from crimes. Sponsor Sen. Lynn Martin cites Rockford murder profits, while supporters note it should not bar writers or filmmakers. Higgins excused Amirante and Motta from a suit now under court control. David Goldberger of ACLU represented them at a May 27 hearing.
