The Agriculture Department reports fruits and nuts can provide substantial energy at low cost versus meat and milk. Fresh apples yield 1,467 calories per 10 cents, while 10 cents buys 6,600 calories of bread. A fruit and nut diet can supply protein and energy comparable to mixed diets, though quantities are smaller.
