From Homeless to Harvard Lauralee Summer's unlikely scholarship story
Lauralee Summer, raised in shelters across three states, earned a full Harvard scholarship and a top class rank. The Quincy High senior, 17, faced a vagabond childhood but taught herself to read, excelled in SATs, and balanced track, wrestling, violin, and tutoring while caring for others. Her mother Elizabeth Summer, once homeless, supported Lauralee's drive as they moved toward a brighter future in Massachusetts.

Smoking linked to higher breast cancer death risk
The study of 604,412 women shows smokers have 25 percent higher breast cancer mortality than non smokers, with risk rising to 75 percent for those smoking two packs daily. Quitting can restore risk to that of lifelong nonsmokers, according to the American Cancer Society. An estimated 46,000 women will die from breast cancer this year.
