Roy Meachum argues that volunteer firefighters and medics embody the Bible’s greatest love by sacrificing for neighbors. he warns that growth and work shifts threaten the volunteer model as districts expand tax burdens to fund paid ambulance and fire services, proposing a county wide paid ambulance corps and protections for volunteers. He cites community impact, tax fairness, and the idea from Sen. Smelser to separate EMS from fire services as a possible solution, while praising current volunteers and stressing the need to preserve their noble role.
