Damascus revitalization earns Maryland Pride in Place award

About nine months earlier Damascus completed an 11 million dollar decade long downtown revitalization transforming the town. Key landmarks were preserved with Bellison’s Market sacrificed for a medical office building while Jimmie Cone Tom & Rays Restaurant and Gladhill’s Meat Market remained. The Druid Theater became a retail and business space with its marquee kept, new bank buildings and a shopping center added near the High School on Md 27. The effort earned the Pride in Place and Progress award from the Maryland Downtown Development Association, top in the planning category, praised by Gov. Glendening for its revitalization and economic development impact. County and state officials joined Damascus residents and committees in the recognition.
