Southern railroads plan consolidation
The Norfolk & Western and Southern railroads announce an in principle plan to consolidate into a $2 billion joint system, subject to boards, stockholders, and ICC approval. They would keep 38 operating railroads but share a holding company with a 1 for 1. ridership. The plan would create a large profitable network with 7500 miles of N&W track and 100 miles of Southern track, linking Lynchburg Virginia to St. Louis and other hubs.
