City aldermen will review Mayor E. Paul Magaha s 1972 budget and possible zoning changes at a 7 30 p m meeting in City Hall. The open hearing will not change the tax rate, with Magaha predicting the 3 756 789 budget will pass despite wage increases for city employees.
County health department officials host a public meeting at 8 p.m. June 15 at North Frederick Elementary School to discuss current area air pollution laws and proposed state ordinance changes. The changes would ban open burning of leaves and garbage after July 1, 1973 unless local refuse collection is unavailable and burning is at least 200 feet from the nearest dwelling.
Senator J Glenn Beall Jr announces a 500 grant under the National Historic Preservation Act to restore the Hessian Barracks on the Maryland School for the Deaf campus in Frederick. The award matches local funds for a planned 35000 project with archaeology explorations planned prior to work.
The deadline to file names for three District Court vacancies in the Sixth Judicial Circuit passed Wednesday, but Frederick County nominees remain undisclosed as the nominating committee defers to the Governor's office. Frederick County Veterans Association readies its July shipment to local servicemen in Vietnam. Addresses must be resubmitted by July 20 to FCVA, P.O. Box 29, Frederick, as changes and transfers occur. Donations fund packages, which include items requested by soldiers. Since November 1967, 1,045 packages have been mailed to county servicemen. the group also holds an annual Christmas party for those home from Vietnam.
New York AP reports stocks rose again with the Dow Jones industrial average up 3.16 to 922.78 at 10:30 a.m. Advancers outpaced decliners by more than 2 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange as gains continued from the prior two sessions.
Secretary Connally pressed his 5 billion general revenue sharing plan before the House Ways and Means Committee as lawmakers voiced strong doubt it could pass. Montgomery Ward announces a 126000 square foot full line store to anchor Frederick Towne Mall this fall. The eastern region store will employ about 350 people and offer services including a 16 day auto service center, Wendy Ward Charm School, interior decorating classes, a cafeteria seating 98, and specialty boutique areas. The Frederick unit opens in Ward’s 100th anniversary year 1972 and joins six existing Washington area stores.
An 18 year old Frederick girl was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital from the Town and Country Restaurant after allegedly unknowingly taking LSD. She was in good condition awaiting examination. Police noted no arrest possible due to no LSD laws. only marijuana arrests possible. A separate report described a “man tripping out” in Middletown chanting the Buddhist Song of the Universe, with no evident intoxication. Trooper Henry W. Pilch Jr. charged James Brown with negligent driving after his eastbound Rt 40 vehicle left the road and hit a Maryland State Road sign. no injuries or further damage reported. Trial set for June 24 at 10 a.m.
