The Farmers and Mechanics National Bank board elected Benjamin L. Shuff as chairman and CEO and named Guy W. Nusz as president. Shuff, 62, began at the bank in 1921 and has held top posts since 1948. Nusz, 44, has been a VP since 1953 and senior VP since 1969, and he will lead the bank which operates 12 locations with about 120 million in resources.

A contract for rehabilitating and widening the substructure of Harney Bridge over Middle Creek was awarded to Valley Construction Company for 41,391 dollars. Thomas Bennett and Hunter bid 52,395 and Wolfe Brothers 60,185. The bridge lies about one mile northeast of the U S 15 and Md 97 intersection near Emmitsburg in the county’s northeast. County engineer recommended award to the low bidder to the county commissioners.

Mt Saint Marys College, an all male school for 163 years, will go coed on a non resident basis next September and on a resident basis in September 1972. The change was announced after a board meeting yesterday. The move follows St Josephs College for women closing in June 1978. The Mt Saint Marys faculty also voted to ease degree access for St Josephs College students to receive degrees from the Mount.

Jail Escapee Surrenders In Tavern
Chester Leroy Stone, 26, the second of two Frederick County Jail escapees, surrendered by phone to the warden then was arrested at Skip's Tavern on East Church Street. Warden Lewis Crutchley, Chief Deputy John Georgants and Sheriff Richard Baumgartner took him into custody. Stone was handcuffed in a chair with a smooth operation.
