NLRB Order Blocks Union Shop Demand in Coal Talks
Washington June 1 coal industry sources say a recent NLRB ruling barring John L Lewis from forcing a union shop weakens his leverage in contract talks. The board ordered Lewis and the United Mine Workers to drop union shop demands, with a June 13 deadline to pledge compliance. If Lewis persists, court injunctions loom. Negotiators remain undecided on continuing a union shop clause in steel contracts, arguing over winter wages and welfare funds while coal stocks remain ample. Talks resume tomorrow in Bluefield West Virginia as mediation may intervene if progress stalls.

Baltimore Commissioner Ends 40 Year Train Commuting Era
U S Commissioner Ernest Volkart began a new commuting life on June 1, leaving the Baltimore and Ohio trains after four decades. He had ridden B O trains between his Aberdeen home and Baltimore work, switching today to the Pennsylvania line. The B and O line from Baltimore to Singerly near Elkton ran its final trip yesterday as the B QO gained abandonment permission for the 45 mile run. Volkart, who played his card games on board, noted only three players remained and recalled years with four or five games. He estimates 11,000 Baltimore Aberdeen trips and about 20,000 games, missing only March 4, 1900 when a cablivcard blocked passage. He called the last B O ride a funeral for an old friend.
