Audubon Failed Grocer Turned Great Naturalist
Audubon and Ferdinand Rozier loaded 810 barrels of whisky and groceries in 1810 and opened a St Genevieve store after a winter voyage. The venture failed as Audubon preferred sketching birds to marketing, selling out in 1811 to Rozier and pursuing his famed ornithological work. The Missouri venture briefly prospered before dissolving, while Audubon’s fame as a naturalist eclipsed his grocery ambitions.
