Beach towns bask in busy Memorial Day crowds
Memorial Day weekend drew record crowds to Ocean City Maryland Rehoboth Beach Delaware and other coastal towns as sunny weather and near ninety degree days attracted as many as sixty thousand visitors to Rehoboth and up to two hundred fifty thousand along Ocean Citys boardwalk. Local officials praised the turnout while noting heavy traffic on S 50 Route 1 and the Bay Bridge approaches with no major incidents reported. About 160 attendees gathered under trees near the Francis Scott Key statue at Mount Olivet for the 79th Memorial Day ceremony. The Francis Scott Key American Legion Post 11 sponsored the event with The Spires Brass Band performing The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Color guards from Fort Detrick and Legion units presented wreaths as the band played Nearer My God to Thee. Rev Israel Yost delivered the keynote, saluting a genuine World War II hero.
