Confederate tombstone dedication honors last Confederate veteran

At Mount Olivet Cemetery a dedication service marked the last Confederate soldier's tombstone placement. Lee Houser, of the Confederacy and Army of the Potomac living history group, spoke of replacing weathered markers for 304 Confederate and nine Union soldiers, expressing pride in ancestors facing hostility for their heritage.

Deadly storms pack region from South Dakota to Massachusetts

The weekend storms killed at least 15 people across the northern Plains upper Midwest and Northeast. A tornado wrecked Spencer South Dakota killing six. Wisconsin and Michigan each reported three deaths. A Massachusetts death followed a falling tree in a car, while a suspected tornado caused fatalities near the West Virginia line. Power outages affected about 900000 homes and businesses with dozens more without service across several states.

Fatal 1 270 crash Causes major Frederick gridlock

A fatal accident on 1 270 near the Monocacy River Bridge early today closed southbound lanes for over three hours, crippling morning traffic out of Frederick. Two additional crashes on US 15 Rosemont Avenue and Md 355 Urbana Park worsened the jam as deputies reported gridlock on every major road.

Hood College honors alumnae at reunion weekend

Hood College celebrated Reunion Weekend May 28 to 31 with three outstanding alumnae honored including Donis Reininger DeHart of Richmond Virginia, a 1948 graduate, who received the Distinguished Graduate Award for significant professional and volunteer contributions to society. The college says 14 reunion classes contributed gifts totaling over 2 million dollars in cash and planned gifts.

City seeks mural artist for 16x40 backdrop in Square Corner park

Brunswick officials solicit bids for a 30 day mural project to adorn a 16 by 40 foot backdrop across from City Hall at Maple Avenue and East Potomac Street. Deadline 4 p.m. Friday June 19. Final piece aims for mid September completion pending funding and Railroad Days in October. Designer Shirley Fetchko of New Windsor selected from a dozen contest entries by the Economic Development Commission. The piece emphasizes railroad history in a watercolor style with brown green blue brick red black tones.
