Yellow Springs schools strive for higher standards and early support
Mr. Storm explains that about one third of the school's families donate time and a senior group called the A Team tutors children from local nursing homes. He emphasizes early intervention, with teachers identifying struggling students and providing extra help to prevent later remedial needs. He notes English language learners, like two Russian students now performing at grade level, benefit from early programs. The district aims to raise the bar despite prior success, while Green Valley Elementary and others in Maryland earned national Blue Ribbon recognition for top honors.

16-year-old acquitted over Civil War pistol replica
A 16-year-old in Sjamsville was acquitted Tuesday of carrying a handgun after a deputy testified the Civil War style revolver found in a car was not a real antique. The judge ruled replicas made before 1898 are exempt from the state transporting weapons ban. The youth’s attorney argued the weapon was a modern reproduction, while the deputy claimed it was illegal. The weapon, a .44-caliber cap-and-ball revolver, was built from a kit by the car’s owner and could not fire modern ammunition. The case centered on whether the revolver counted as an antique or replica.
