No positive signs shown in closing U.S. trade gap
The Commerce Department reports a six month U.S. trade deficit at 83.9 billion dollars for mid 1986, with June deficit at 14.2 billion dollars. Imports rose five percent to 33.2 billion while exports gained 9.8 percent to 19.1 billion, driven largely by a 2 billion gold shipment to Japan. Analysts foresee renewed protectionist moves as deficits widen and the dollar's decline continues. The report notes deficits with Europe and Japan, rising farm and energy import costs, and weaker housing and productivity data. The Democratic House plans a veto override vote on curbs to textile imports, spurring market expectations for passage.

OPEC members back voluntary oil production cuts
In Geneva a majority of the 13 member states backed voluntary cuts to output though several key producers including Iraq and Iran resisted or hedged their positions. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait pledged sizable reductions while ministers warned talks remain delicate and a unanimous quota agreement is not yet assured.
