Dick Kirkpatrick stands beside his water source heat pump in his home which uses well water and heats and cools the house. The system dehumidifies the basement and is three times as efficient as resistance electric heating. He hopes to extend it to power the clothes dryer.
Kirkpatrick and his wife Julie led a self or locally crafted home project using items from Singanore High School work-study helper Mike Guilday, Don Hahn, Stover Brothers masons, Bob Halley duct work, Moats draperies, Gouge Lumber clerks, and other local suppliers. The 1900 square foot house runs the heat pump year round with dehumidification, costing about 20 cents per hour to operate. A sprinkler test demonstrates the system’s warmth, though success depends on local conditions such as private wells and sun exposure.
