Samuel Pearse discovers his wife and two children dead from bullets in a burning home. A baby and another child lie slain, the motive suspected as robbery. A strange Black man was seen nearby as authorities search the surrounding area. A fire at the residence was quickly controlled by a neighbor.
Anglesea New Jersey July 30 two fishing yachts Nora and Alvin B capsized on Hereford Inlet bar in a violent sea. Eight confirmed dead, 33 aboard Nora with seven lost, 12 aboard Alvin B with all but one saved. Captain Henry S Ludlam and a five man life-saving crew aided in the rescue, pulling survivors from the water after a perilous toss.

John D Rockefeller returned to New York aboard the Amelia after a Mediterranean and European trip with Mrs Rockefeller and their son John D Rockefeller Jr. He declined to discuss the Dayton court matter, saying he would not comment on the suit. He said his health was good and he would attend church at Tarrytown.
A New York Central Express, No 87, struck a landslide near New Harlem seven miles north of Fishkill Landing, plunging into the Hudson River. The engine and baggage car left the tracks, several cars followed, and firemen, engineers, and a baggageman are feared drowned. Passengers injured number scores, with Highland hospital and Printers’ Hotel ready to treat them. Special trains brought doctors from Poughkeepsie.
Lews Emery Jr of Bradford has sent his acceptance letter to Lincoln and Democratic state chairmen for Pennsylvania governor. Notification will be by letter instead of the usual method, with other ticket nominees to receive formal notices at a Pillsburg meeting on August 23 where Emery will speak. In New York, Policeman Hedderman died saving a drowning boy in Cromwell Creek. a fellow officer nearly drowned trying to help. In Harrisburg, Hungarian laborer Joseph Szotuky was murdered in Middletown, with two men arrested on suspicion.
George Tucker Bispham, renowned Philadelphia lawyer and equity scholar, died of paralysis at his Newport Rhode Island summer home after a recent stroke. Born 1838, he led as a top corporation lawyer and professor of equity at the University of Pennsylvania, authored influential works, and served as a longtime trusted adviser to major firms including Pennsylvania Railroad and Girard Trust. His funeral was in Newport then Laurel Hill Cemetery.
